Exploring the Frame

Alumni Exhibition

        Out of all of the Alumni photos, Karen Mawikere's images stood out to me the most. More specifically her picture named "Shoes". Both images are hard to tell what the subject is but they both still say a lot. They are pictures of settings that are not commonly found in New England, and seems to be taken in a tropical country. They both are composed of many different layers, and these layers help explain what is going on in the setting.

       The picture titled "Shoes" is of a brick structure behind a wall with barbed wire over it. The barbed wire brings up many questions including, what is behind the wall, and what they are trying to keep out, or in. The subject of the picture seems to be the barbed wire, but the title is Shoes which does not make much sense.

       Something that I found really interesting is the concrete in the brick building. The concrete is both parallel and perpendicular to the barbed wire. This small detail in the composition of the photo makes it much more pleasing to the eye. The tree in the upper right corner of the photo also adds some color to the picture, which without would be a very dark and boring picture. Something that I really liked about the picture was that only the middle of the picture was bright, and it was surrounded by a darker color around the border of the image.

      The picture stood out to me primarily because it reminded me of my visits to Brazil. For that reason this picture may mean something to me, and mean something completely different to someone else. Pictures are interesting for that reason, one picture has multiple different meanings and it is all different depending on how you interpret the picture. To me the picture says safety, but to the photographer it has something to do with shoes.

Bebe and I - Nicholas Nixon

  When deciding which of these three pictures I thought was easier to talk about I was instantly drawn to the image of the couple, Bebe and I by Nicholas Nixon. The first thing I spotted that helped me differentiate the selected photo from the others was the coloring. This picture is in black and white and the other pictures have a bunch of other colors. Even if it was in color, it is the only picture that shows a mood clearly. It is easier to read the expressions on someones face than a lawn or a field.

  Bebe and I is a very interesting picture, to me, because it is a very hard picture to understand. The expression in the couples face shows many different emotions but overall happiness. Something that stood out to me was the lighting coming from the left side of the picture onto the woman, where it brings light to her wedding band. I assume that because of the title of the picture and the ring that the couple are married. Their facial expressions makes me believe that they have gone through some hardships, but their body language, where they both embrace each other, shows togetherness.

My Selection

        After this exercise I noticed that my classmates were more interested in my simpler pictures. Things that are just part of your everyday. Both of their top picks were very simple and close up. They suggested that I took less pictures up close but I thought it was hard to get a picture of the color red with out it being staged or up close. I really liked the picture with my roommate holding his phone, mainly because the shot was not staged.

I chose the color red because I thought that it would be much easier than the color yellow, and because I thought that there would be less classmates doing red than blue.
